NEW IBERIA MAN CONVICTED OF ATTEMPTED FIRST DEGREE MURDER AND FELON IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM

     Anthony Mallery, 40, of New Iberia, was convicted of two counts of attempted first degree murder and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

     Mallery’s convictions stem from an incident in Loreauville in November of 2021. One of the victims—Mallery’s half-brother—was on his way to pick up an employee and had offered Mallery a ride. While the two victims worked to hook a trailer up to their truck, Mallery shot one of the victims in the face and started shooting at his half-brother, who hid under a house.

     Mallery stole the truck and fled from law enforcement, eventually crashing the truck and hiding in a cane field. Mallery had two firearms in his waistband when he was apprehended.

     In 2019, Mallery pled guilty to domestic abuse aggravated assault. In Louisiana, persons who have been convicted of certain felonies—for example, crimes of violence, drug offenses, or sex offenses—are prohibited from possessing firearms. Further, persons who have been previously convicted of certain domestic violence offenses are prohibited from possessing firearms. Domestic abuse aggravated assault is a crime of violence. Therefore, Mallery was not permitted to possess a firearm.

     After a four-day jury trial, Mallery was unanimously convicted of all three charges by a jury.

     A sentencing hearing is scheduled before the Hon. Lewis J. Pitman, Jr. on December 9, 2025.

     The potential sentence for attempted first degree murder is not less than ten nor more than fifty years at hard labor without benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence. The potential penalty for felon in possession of a firearm is not less than five years at hard labor nor more than twenty years without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.

     This case was prosecuted by Ashley Hammons and was investigated by the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office (Lead Detective Jared Spurlock) with assistance from the New Iberia Police Department and the M. Bofill Duhé Acadiana Crime Lab.
